The Public Service Pension Trust Fund (PSPTF) on Saturday February 25, 2024 joined the Teachers Union of Malawi (TUM) in a meeting for District and Youth Wing leaders from all the 34 Education Districts and 6 Education Divisions in the country. TUM gave PSPTF a platform to provide updates to the members on the Contributory Pension Scheme which holds immense significance for civil servants, as it offers them a structured pathway towards securing their financial future post-retirement.

During the meeting, participants were taken through comprehensive presentations detailing the operations of the Fund and benefits of the Contributory Pension Scheme. Importantly, PSPTF officials addressed queries and concerns raised by teacher representatives, fostering an environment of open dialogue and collaboration. The presence of Zamara Pension Administrators, who are the pension administrators for the PSPTF, also helped to clarify the relationship that exists between PSPTF and Zamara.

The meeting was also attended by PSPTF Trustee, Bernard Nyondo, who represents TUM in the PSPTF’s Board of Trustees. PSPTF’s Board of Trustees is made up of 12 Trustees, 6 of which represent the members (government employees) and the other 6 represent the employer (Malawi Government).

Speaking during the meeting, TUM Secretary General, Charles Kumchenga emphasised the need for TUM and PSPTF to continue working together to reach as many teachers as possible with information about the Contributory Pension Scheme.

This is not the first time that TUM and PSPTF are collaborating as PSPTF also involved TUM in sensitisation meetings it held with various Trade Unions in August and September 2023. Through such engagements, both parties seek to foster trust, transparency, and accountability in pension administration, thereby boosting confidence among teachers in the efficiency of the Contributory Pension Scheme.
